Alaska Travel Info

Alaska Railroad and Train Travel

The Alaska Railroad offers one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys, connecting major destinations while showcasing breathtaking landscapes inaccessible by road. From the comfort of a glass-domed train car, travelers witness towering mountains, pristine forests, and abundant wildlife against the backdrop of Alaska’s vast wilderness.

Major Alaska Railroad Routes

Denali Star Train

The flagship route operates daily between Anchorage and Fairbanks during summer (mid-May to mid-September) with stops in Wasilla, Talkeetna, and Denali National Park. The 12-hour journey offers spectacular views of the Alaska Range and, weather permitting, Denali itself.

Coastal Classic Train

This summer daily service connects Anchorage and Seward, traveling along Turnagain Arm and through the pristine wilderness of the Kenai Mountains. The route provides access to Kenai Fjords National Park and some of Alaska’s most dramatic coastal scenery.

Glacier Discovery Train

This seasonal route extends beyond the Coastal Classic path to Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop, Grandview, and Whittier. Unique “whistle stops” allow hikers and adventurers to disembark in remote wilderness areas with no road access.

Hurricane Turn Train

One of the last flag-stop trains in America, this service runs between Talkeetna and Hurricane Gulch. Passengers can request stops anywhere along the route, serving remote cabins and homesteads without road access.

Aurora Winter Train

Weekend service (expanded during holidays) operates between Anchorage and Fairbanks in winter months, offering a completely different perspective with snow-covered landscapes and potential northern lights viewing opportunities.
